While I believe that active participation is one of our responsibilities as members of society, I also understand that, sadly, everyday life often gets in the way of doing so. As a grandmother, mother, daughter, and community leader, I feel that when people see others make things happen in spite of everything else they are navigating in their lives, it inspires them to do the same. When the people you serve know you're working on their behalf, it makes them feel seen and heard. Like it or not, we are all interdependent to some extent. There are so many people fighting for basic human decency right now that I cannot think of a better time to get involved in civic engagement. We are all needed."

We Are California in Action
Wings Without Borders joined the We Are California — People Over Billionaires Press Conference & Rally at the California State Capitol, standing alongside community members and partner organizations to amplify the voices of Californians.
Advocates traveled to Sacramento to meet directly with legislative offices, discuss critical issues impacting communities across the state, and observe the democratic process firsthand. The rally supported AB 1790, AB 1633, and AB 2465, bringing these issues directly to policymakers.

Partner organizations including AAPI for Civic Empowerment, California Immigrant Policy Center, PICO California, SEIU California, and Faith in the Valley joined together to demonstrate that democracy works best when people participate.
Standing Against Immigration Detention Expansion
On July 7, 2026, community members and advocates gathered in California City for a press conference opposing the expansion of immigration detention and urging officials to deny permits supporting these facilities.
The California City Planning Commission considered an appeal challenging the approval of CoreCivic's Site Review Plan. The appeal was denied in a 2–1 vote, allowing the permit to remain in effect. During the hearing, the Commission Chair argued that the federal government's purchase of the facility through the Department of Homeland Security limited the City's authority, despite legal opinions challenging that interpretation.
Advocates also raised awareness about Carlos Mendoza, who was shot by ICE in Patterson and has reportedly faced inadequate medical treatment while in detention. His case demonstrates the human consequences of detention and the continued need for oversight and accountability.
Although the decision was not the outcome advocates hoped for, people from across California came together in solidarity. The work continues to protect families, demand accountability, and defend the dignity of people in detention.
The $1.5 Billion Expansion of Federal Detention in California
This video discusses the federal government's reported $1.5 billion purchase of two large immigration detention facilities in California from CoreCivic.
Federal ownership may limit California's ability to regulate and oversee conditions inside these facilities. The purchase is part of a broader effort to expand federal immigration detention capacity.
Community members are encouraged to contact their United States representatives and demand stronger oversight, greater transparency, and changes to federal immigration detention laws.
California Communities Stand Together
Advocates and community members from across California joined a peaceful protest outside the California City detention facility.
A caravan brought people together to honor those whose lives have been lost during immigration enforcement actions and to demand justice for detained individuals who have experienced inadequate medical care, neglect, and harmful conditions.
The protest called for accountability, humane treatment, proper medical care, and stronger oversight of immigration detention facilities.
